Adults in their 40s should prioritize regular eye check-ups to prevent vision loss from glaucoma, a chronic and potentially debilitating eye condition that can lead to blindness if left unchecked, according to an ophthalmologist at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi.
Dr. Tanuj Dada, Professor of Ophthalmology and Head of Glaucoma Services at RP Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, emphasized that early detection of glaucoma is critical, as the disease often presents no noticeable symptoms, making it particularly dangerous.
Without proper screening and intervention, glaucoma can silently damage the optic nerve, leading to irreversible vision loss and, eventually, blindness.
On social media platform X, Dr. Dada urged the public to take proactive steps in safeguarding their vision, stating, "Glaucoma, often referred to as the 'silent thief of sight,' can cause irreversible vision loss if left untreated. If you’re over 40 and have no symptoms, it’s crucial to schedule an eye check-up every two years to catch this condition in its early stages and avoid permanent damage."
Dr. Dada further explained that glaucoma, also known as kala motia, specifically targets the optic nerve, which is responsible for transmitting visual information from the eye to the brain. It is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, and due to its asymptomatic nature, many people may unknowingly suffer from it until significant damage has occurred.
"Glaucoma is called the 'silent thief of vision' because it can progress undetected, silently deteriorating sight without any warning signs, making early detection even more important," Dr. Dada concluded.
Individuals at a higher risk of developing glaucoma include those who suffer from conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or those who have a family history of glaucoma.
Dr. Tanuj Dada, a renowned ophthalmologist, explained that people using steroids—whether in the form of creams, eye drops, tablets, or inhalers—are also more vulnerable to this sight-threatening disease. Additionally, those who have experienced any kind of eye injury are at an elevated risk of glaucoma.
Glaucoma-related blindness is on the rise in India, largely due to a lack of awareness and delayed diagnosis. According to various independent studies and hospital reports, the condition often goes undetected, with estimates suggesting that around 90 percent of cases remain unidentified in India, further highlighting the critical need for regular eye exams.
Dr. Dada emphasized that regular eye check-ups are essential for everyone, especially those with risk factors, to detect glaucoma early and manage it effectively. He stated, “If you have any of these risk factors, it's important to get an eye check-up every year.
If you're over the age of 60, an annual check-up becomes even more crucial. Regular screenings are essential to prevent glaucoma from progressing to the point of irreversible blindness.”
With early detection and proper management, vision can be preserved, ensuring that individuals continue to enjoy their sight for years to come. However, without timely intervention, glaucoma can silently cause significant damage, ultimately leading to complete vision loss. Dr. Dada's call to action urges everyone to be proac
