The rocking chair is a special form of chair that enhances the quality of life and adds a touch of pleasure to living.
It can rock back and forth and is primarily made of materials such as rattan, wood, or metal. The appearance of the rocking chair dates back to the time after cradles and rocking horses.
Cradles appeared in the 15th century, followed by rocking horses. However, it wasn't until the 18th century that the rocking chair was officially invented. Before this, no one had considered inventing such relaxing furniture for adults.
The earliest known depiction of rocking movement is seen in alchemical symbols, with an androgynous figure standing on a crescent moon in a woodcut by a German in 1625. Due to the innate human tendency to rock the body, the rocking chair gained enthusiastic praise for its invention.
Many famous figures such as US presidents, Picasso, and Mark Twain had their beloved rocking chairs. This relaxing way not only brings joy but also lowers blood pressure, slows breathing, and can even exercise body balance. The term "rocking chair" was officially recorded in the Oxford Dictionary in 1787.
In 1981, a work titled "The Rocking Chair" won an Oscar, a beautifully poetic animated short film. The synopsis of the film is as follows:
"It falls in the forest, transforms into the rocking chair of a farmer's home, swaying for decades, witnessing the farmer's wedding, witnessing every warm day, becoming a good companion in the children's childhood. However, as time passes, aging makes it unable to escape the fate of being thrown out of the house.
Through numerous seasons of wind and snow, the rocking chair witnesses the ever-changing nature of the city and subtle changes. Until the museum guard rediscovers it. Compared to cold, rigid lines, the rocking chair brings the children joy. In their imagination, it can be a little boat, forever carrying happiness."
As a witness to the trivialities and ups and downs of ordinary families, the rocking chair has become a living member of the household. Additionally, it is a witness to the changes of the times and the growth of cities.
With continuous advancements in craftsmanship and the development of new materials, designers found that the previous constraints hindering their imagination in design disappeared. They could freely unleash their creativity in designing. Rocking chairs have undergone innovative advancements in design, material application, and craftsmanship.
The conventional understanding people have held about rocking chairs has been repeatedly overturned. The combination of high craftsmanship and high-tech materials has become the trend in the development of rocking chairs. Pursuing sleek designs has become mainstream, making rocking chairs not only comfortable but also essential decorative items in interior design.
Rocking chairs, a timeless symbol of comfort and witness to life's quiet moments, continue to evolve with innovation. From their humble origins to becoming cherished pieces in homes, these chairs bridge the past with the future, embodying both tradition and modernity. As they embrace new materials and designs, rocking chairs persist as a furniture and reflections of our evolving lifestyles and tastes.
