I didn’t really get the hype around essences at first. They looked like… water.
But after trying a few Korean ones, I started noticing how they quietly shape the whole routine—like a middle step that makes everything else feel more complete.
These four, in particular, each gave me a different experience.

1. I’m From Mugwort Essence

This one feels incredibly simple, almost too simple at first glance. It’s very watery, no fuss, no heavy scent—just that subtle herbal note that makes it feel calming. I usually reach for it when my skin is acting up or feels a bit overwhelmed.
There’s a gentle, comforting quality to it, like it’s trying to settle things down rather than impress you instantly. Over time, I noticed my skin looked less irritated, more at ease. It’s not dramatic, but it’s reliable in a quiet way.

2. Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner

The texture here is what surprised me the most. It’s thicker than what I expected from something called a “toner,” almost like a light gel but still fluid. When I pat it in, it doesn’t disappear too quickly, which I actually like—it gives me time to really press it into the skin.
It feels deeply comforting, especially on days when my skin feels a bit dry or tight. There’s something minimal and straightforward about it, like it focuses on doing one thing well rather than trying to multitask.

3. Missha Time Revolution The First Essence

This one has a slightly more “refined” feel compared to the others. It’s still lightweight, but there’s a smoothness to it that makes my skin feel instantly softer. I tend to use it when I want my routine to feel a bit more polished. Over time, I felt like it helped with overall texture—nothing extreme, just a gradual improvement that you notice when you’re not really looking for it. It’s the kind of product that works in the background but leaves a subtle difference.

4. Benton Snail Bee High Content Essence

This one is a bit different from the rest—slightly more viscous, with that signature snail-based texture, but not sticky in an uncomfortable way. It feels like it wraps the skin in a light layer of care. I usually go for this when my skin feels a bit worn out or needs extra attention. There’s a sense of repair and support here, especially when dealing with uneven texture or post-breakout marks. It’s not flashy, but it feels purposeful.
I don’t think there’s a single “best” option—it really depends on what your skin is asking for that day. Sometimes it’s about soothing things down, other times it’s about adding a bit more care. That’s what makes exploring essences interesting—they’re subtle, but they shape everything that comes after.
